Tristar and Hinterland Donate to Skills Canada 2011

That’s right folks! It’s that time of year again!

At our local convention centre, Tradex in Abbotsford BC, a group of aspiring masons went head to head in a provincial level brick laying competition.

Most people think of masonry as simply laying bricks, blocks or stones. However, this trade is multi-dimensional and varies in complexity, from laying a simple masonry walkway to installing the ornate exterior of a high-rise building. In fact, masonry is more closely related to architecture than pure construction as it demands a considerable amount of pre-planning, calculation and analysis of blueprints.

Every project starts with an examination of the plans and technical specifications with the architect or engineer in charge to see what has to be done, followed by material selection and work site preparation. Masons use an assortment of tools such as trowels to spread mortar, plumb lines and squares to check angles and alignment, and power saws, hammers and chisels to shape materials. These tools are used to build walls, floors, partitions, fireplaces, chimneys and other structures made of brick, pre-cast masonry panels, concrete blocks and other masonry materials. Masons must understand the effects that air, moisture and pressure can have on these structures in order to meet construction safety standards.

Tristar and Hinterland Masonry Supplies were out there supporting our new up and comers by donating all the building materials (and taking great photos)! Sev took the honorary role of adjudication.  A tough task with today’s rising talent….

(they work hard and they wait hard…. for the results!)

Tough adjudication descisions took place as the quality of work shone through:

Nice work indeed!

Congratulations to all our up and coming Masons – keep it up!
